WWF - Vision for Sustainable Living

Getting around future cities:

Most people will live just five minutes walking distance from amenities such as shops, schools and doctors, and there will be public transport hubs in the centre of each neighbourhood.

Most individuals no longer own cars. Instead, for trips where public transport isn't suitable, people use car club schemes. These cars are highly efficient and powered by electricity from renewable sources. All residential areas contain a car "pick up point" within five minutes walk.

With few cars around, cycling becomes a safer and more pleasant way of getting around. And pedestrianised streets encourage people to walk around and socialise.

Each community is now connected to fast, efficient public transport - primarily trams, which emit just a fraction of the carbon emissions which cars do.
